A pilonidal sinus is a small tunnel or pit in the skin near the top of the buttock crease, usually caused by ingrown hair. It can get infected, causing pain, swelling and discharge, and often comes back if not treated properly.
A thin laser fibre seals the sinus tract through a tiny opening. Very little pain, small wound and a quick return to daily life.
The infected tract is removed and the area is allowed to heal, advised for larger or repeatedly infected sinuses.
If there is active pus, it is drained first to relieve pain, and the sinus is treated once the infection settles.
With laser treatment, most patients go home the same day and return to light activity within a few days, following simple cleaning and hygiene advice.
